A place to begin.
A home base for practice, shared responsibility, and trying things. A place to make mistakes, build trust, and return with better questions.
HOME BASE · PRACTICE · BELONGINGA DISTANT DREAM. REAL WORK.
Strong enough to act. Curious enough to learn.
Grounded enough to care.
We’re building toward a future where young people have the tools, the judgment, and the will to meet an unfamiliar world.
Explore the Atlas ↗What might change if growing up meant discovering how much you could become?
Not just choosing a future from the ones you’ve already seen. Meeting people who know things you don’t. Working with your hands. Learning to think clearly, ask for help, keep a promise, and begin again.
Capability Atlas is a developing program built around that possibility: real work, skilled people, unfamiliar places, and the freedom to find a direction worth pursuing.
See how the idea becomes practice ↗“I don’t know.
Let’s find out together.”
The long-term model brings a home base, time in the field, and people who practice what they teach into one connected experience.
A home base for practice, shared responsibility, and trying things. A place to make mistakes, build trust, and return with better questions.
HOME BASE · PRACTICE · BELONGINGField experiences with farms, workshops, forests, and communities. Discover how people live, what they know, and what a place asks of us.
EXPOSURE · CULTURE · PERSPECTIVEPractitioners with hard-earned knowledge. Mentors who model judgment, patience, and care—and learners who eventually help others begin.
CRAFT · MENTORSHIP · RECIPROCITYThis is the model we are working toward. The first pilot starts smaller, locally, with an accountable operating partner.
An ordinary project can open an extraordinary number of doors.
Follow one illustrative learning journey. The work is tangible; the growth reaches beyond the thing you make.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXPERIENCES · NOT SCHEDULED ACTIVITIESWe can question an idea, test an approach, and demand better work while treating the person with dignity.
Care for the places, tools, relationships, and opportunities entrusted to us. Leave more possibility for whoever comes next.
A meaningful choice comes with real consequences, reflection, and the chance to repair what went wrong.
There is no single impressive life to copy. Broad experience helps people choose their own direction with open eyes.
THE LONG HORIZON
Learn from the world.
Become useful to it.
Help someone else begin.
Our next chapter is taking shape in the Sonora area of California.
We are working toward a small, nonresidential pilot that connects young people, local practitioners, and useful projects. The first task is to build the relationships and operating conditions that make it worth running.
Atlas was initiated by Justin Porter with a simple ambition: make broad human capability ordinary. A local pilot gives that ambition a place to be tested, questioned, and improved.
Explore a pilot partnership ↗A proposed first proving ground.
Help co-design a small, supervised learning pilot around local knowledge and community priorities.
Useful work. Willing participants. Skilled guidance. A safe place to begin.
An accountable operator, appropriate safeguards and insurance, a suitable site, and confirmed resources.
Find local partners. Understand needs. Shape a workable first test.
Confirm the people, safeguards, site, and resources before participants begin.
Document what happened. Invite critique. Repeat, change, or stop based on evidence.
Capability Atlas is a developing initiative, not an established operating school or a currently enrolling program. This website describes its vision and proposed approach. No confirmed funding, pilot dates, site, operating partner, tax-exempt status, or demonstrated program outcomes are implied. We welcome exploratory conversations; participation begins only after the necessary operating conditions are in place.
The proposed pilot will examine participation, participant-defined goals, observed performance on bounded tasks, help-seeking, adaptation, feedback, and safety. With consent, follow-up can explore what participants continued to do afterward. A small pilot can teach us how to improve; it cannot establish sweeping claims about lifelong capability.
Shared spaces, materials, practitioner time, transportation support, and introductions can make a first pilot possible. We intend to pursue in-kind support, partnerships, and eligible funding through an appropriate operator. This site does not accept payments or promise tax deductions. Financial arrangements would be agreed with an accountable partner.
You don’t need to carry the whole Atlas.
Help shoulder a piece of it.
A skill. A space. A useful introduction. A willingness to help build the first honest test.
